She was a beacon of hope to everyone around her, and according to a report Eunice Kennedy Shriver passed away early this morning (August 11) at the age of 88.

The sister of fallen President John F. Kennedy and mother of Maria Shriver Schwarzenegger died of undisclosed causes following a week in critical condition at Cape Cod Hospital in Barnstable, Massachusetts.

Her family released a statement, saying Shriver was, "a living prayer, a living advocate, a living center of power. She set out to change the world and to change us, and she did that and more."

Among her many accomplishments, Eunice organized the first Special Olympics back in 1968, inspired by her mentally disabled sister Rosemary.  She is survived by her husband, five children, and nineteen grandchildren.
